We had a fantastic field trip to the Fairbanks Museum yesterday. We got to take a trip to the Moon! The Firsties learned and reviewed so many things about the Moon, Earth and Space. Ask them to give you a demonstration of waxing and waning - they thought it was hilarious.

We had an amazing time on Friday night! We enjoyed pizza, veggies, snacks, and juice before having a super fun time playing 4 corners in the cafeteria. Nick was so good he won both games! Then we settled in to watch Wallace & Gromit A Grand Day Out. I wish I had a recording of all the laughter that filled our rooms. A slideshow of pictures will have to do though!
We've been learning about the Earth and its place in the Universe and we've used so many tools and resources to help us. Mrs. Eckhardt has a great link on the Library web page and Ms. Reed let us borrow an amazing tool where we could actually see how the Earth and Moon rotate to cause different Moon phases. It was so awesome that Carly used her work on writing time to write her a thank you note!
January's Community Meeting has been changed. It will now be on Thursday, January 28th from 7:50-8:20am. Please join us if you can. This is also an early release day and Firsties will be dismissed at 11:35am.
I'm really excited about the new way for Firsties to practice their spelling words - you can even access it from home! I've put a link at the end of this post, but you can also access it under our links for learning tab as well (the students are experts at navigating this section). There is even an app for the iPad! (I'm not sure about other devices). By going to Spelling City your child can choose a list of words - either trick words or first grade words - then they can choose from multiple activities to help them learn! I will say, the Hang Mouse game is not my favorite as it is more of a guessing game than actual spelling practice. Please let me know if you have any questions and happy spelling!
You can start watching for these cards to be in the outside pouch of your child's reading bag. When you see this card you will know that your child has had an individual reading conference with me. This card will also list the name of a book (under teacher comments) and directions for how your child should be using this book as well as the current reading strategy you can help them work on at home. This helps kids focus in on and practice a certain skill to make it more automatic for them. I hope you find these cards helpful as you read with your child.
Our classroom received a very generous donation of the much needed drying rack we asked for! We will no longer have to spread our papers out along the floor to dry - this is exciting stuff in First Grade and we couldn't be any more appreciative! THANK YOU!
Please don't forget to check our wish list periodically to see if you might have something we're looking for. I just added an item to our Amazon wish list for us to use during our Daily 5 Word Work. Thanks again for being such supportive partners in your Firstie's education - we make a great team! I'm hoping you all saw the note in your child's folder today telling you about the changes our share time is taking on. I'm really excited for this change and can't wait to see how these Firsties encourage and inspire each other.
Just in case you missed it:
Our Firsties kicked off Winter Wellness with a trip to Kingdom Gymnastics last week. Everyone was active, adventurous, and brave! We had a wonderful time and many students were already asking if we could come back. Thank you so much to our chaperones who helped make this event a success- we couldn't have done it without you!
