We had an absolutely amazing trip on Thursday! We made ice cream, learned about bees and honey, apples and cider, and the life cycle of a pumpkin. We had a fantastic time and I heard lots of Firsties say it was "the best field trip ever!" After we learned all about the sustainable agriculture we ended our trip by eating our ice cream with delicious apple crisp and rolling down the hill. We are so lucky to live in such an amazing community. Thank You Beattie Family!

One of our classroom jobs this year is being the "Tour Guide". This child's job is to use our classroom iPad to take pictures of our class throughout the week. Right now the Tour Guide is only taking pictures during our Exploration time, but as we get more comfortable with this job my hope is that they will take pictures throughout our entire day. I often get so engrossed and busy with what we are doing that I forget to stop and take pictures - I'm hoping the Firsties will help me with this! Below is a video of the photos this week's Tour Guide snapped. Enjoy! It was great to see so many people at Open House. It is always a pleasure to visit with you and share our classroom with you. For those of you who were brave enough to let a child take your photo during Open House - here they are!
Thank you so much to everyone who helped us celebrate Grandparents Day. The kids really enjoyed sharing the afternoon with their Grandparents. Grandparents came from near and far to make this celebration possible. The love that filled our classroom was heartwarming. I wish I would have had more time to talk with everyone - you are all truly wonderful; and it's true, we think you shine like the sun! If you'd like any of the pictures from the above video just shoot me an email and I'll happily share it with you.
Please join us tonight! From 5-6pm the PTG will host a spaghetti dinner (cost is by donation). 6-7:30 pm Danville School will have Open House. During this time you are free to visit our classroom as well as the entire school. Don't forget the gym, art room, music room and library. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you!Writer's Island is THE HOT SPOT in our classroom right now! It is ALWAYS full. It is the first Daily 5 center to fill up at both Reader's and Writer's Workshop and it's even full at explore time. Here Firsties (so far it's all I've got for a first grade nickname) are able to use their writer's notebooks to free write anything their little hearts desire. I've seen things like stories, diaries, lists, labeled pictures, and so much more come out of this entirely self directed center. I think I'm loving it just as much as they are. We have a room full of writers and it makes my heart smile.
Right now in Math we are reviewing some things we learned last year, exploring different materials and strategies and getting ready for our brains to start thinking about numbers and patterns in a deeper way this year. I'm impressed with how much these guys remembered from last year and we are off to a great start!
As you know, this Friday, September 11, 2015 we will celebrate Grandparents Day in First Grade. We are so excited to have grandparents join us in the afternoon. Our celebration and snack will take us up until dismissal time which may mean a change in transportation home for some of your kiddos. Please click the link below to let me know if your child will be going home from school with his/her grandparents this Friday.
On Friday, September 11, 2015 the K/1 Team will celebrate Grandparents Day by inviting our students grandparents (or substitute grandparents) to join us at school. The celebration will take place from 1:30-2:20. Grandparents will join us for our Exploration time in the classroom and then move with us to the cafeteria for a special snack. In order to help make this event a success we are looking for your help. Please click on the link below and sign up if you are able to either send something in or come in to help set up.
