One of the most exciting days so far this year was the day each Kinder became an official member of the Mickey Mouse Club! Our first Global Citizenship unit focuses on rules- what they are, why we have them, etc. This is a beginning step in creating our classroom community, and one we were proud to take. We know that to be a Mouseketeer you have to be: Safe Kind Responsible Growing (never give up, keep moving forward) These 4 expectations are not only important in our classroom, but out in the world as well. We will work very hard on all of these all year long. Below is a clip we watched from a movie called Meet the Robinson's. This is how we kicked off learning about our always growing brain and learning that failure is an important part of success - As Mouseketeers we Keep Moving Forward! Similar to the Daily 3, The Daily 5 is a structure we use during our literacy time in Kindergarten. This framework provides Kinders with multiple opportunities to engage in authentic literacy learning independently, as well as with their peers. Although all 5 choices (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing) haven't been introduced yet, we have been very successful with the choices we've learned so far.
Here's what we've been working on: We met our first Superkid, Cass! Cass loves to cook and has been helping us learn all about the letter C. We even had ice cream to celebrate what a great job we've been doing of using our ice cream lines (strawberry, vanilla, chocolate) to help us write our letter C's correctly. We also worked together to make a treat from Cass's Cookbook - A Crunchy Castle. Learning really IS fun! The Daily 3 is a framework we use for our math time in Kindergarten. By using this structure Kinders are able to choose from a variety of way to work on their math skills. Although the activities change throughout the year, the 3 choices (Math by Myself, Math with Someone, Math Writing) do not. Here are a few pictures of us working with someone to discover hidden partners when decomposing numbers. "Five is the same as 2 and 3".
This morning we had 4th graders visit our classroom to do some buddy reading. We have siblings in 4th grade and Kindergarten!
Yup! It's the end of the school year, we can be funny, while still doing our work. Adding funny glasses to the read with someone totes is a cause for lots of giggles.
So much more than naming teen numbers. Kinders separate 10 and some more. They count using the Say Ten way: ten 1, ten 2, ten 3 and so on. Students hear the separation of the 10 ones and some ones as they count, solidifying their understanding as they also return to the rote counting: eleven, twelve, thirteen,... etc.
Then we just has some exercising fun playing Teen Twister! The bikes are back at Danville School! Kinders got to ride the bikes today! FUN!!!!! We are thankful for Mr. Robbins' help.
