We have math talks about math strategies to solve problems, reading strategies to decode and comprehend a book. What about a strategy in checkers? Actually watching the moves of your opponent and then making your move.

Kinders started learning about subtraction by connecting to the book Five Little Monkeys. They acted the story out and read number sentences to match. "Five take away one". Learning is fun!
Word Family Phonics - an, ap, at. The word families an, ap & at are a good phonics group to start with. They all have the short vowel a sound. There are a good variety of words in the families that have familiar picture clues (like cat, van, cap, etc).

Now they are ready to apply that skill into using a checklist to assess their opinion writing. As we continue our professional development as candidates for National Board Certified Teachers, we are digging DEEP into writing. DEEP stands for Details, Engineering, Editing, Purpose. Kinders are deep in an opinion writing unit. We look forward to sharing their published writing with you in the near future.
Mentor texts are pieces of literature that both teacher and student can return to and reread for many different purposes. They are texts to be studied and imitated...Mentor texts help students to take risks and be different writers tomorrow than they are today. It helps them to try out new strategies and formats.
Kinders listen to a mentor text I can't said the Ant. Opinions and reasons to justify the opinion. Topic: Weather
Types of weather that will be defined during an hour class and illustrated through hands on activities. The scientific method is introduced or reinforced and applied to weather scenarios. Our elementary guidance counselor has started a unit with the Kinders to assist them in finding and using strategies to solve problems with peers and skills to decided if a problem is within their reach, or when a problem is serious and adult assistance is needed. This poster will be up in our classroom to remind Kinders of their choices.
