At yesterday's Community Meeting our class performed the song One Small Voice. When we introduced this song to Mr. C. he liked it so much he decided to use it for our upcoming winter concert! The Firsties did an amazing job and I am so proud of them!

We've been learning about doubles facts during Math time. Ask your Firstie what a doubles fact is - (an addition number sentence where both addends are the same). Learning our doubles facts by heart will help us quickly solve other, more difficult, number sentences in the very near future. Help your Firstie practice their doubles facts at home. The new game I put on our links for learning section was a HUGE hit this past week! Our November Community Meeting is TOMORROW! (Tuesday, Nov 24th) The meeting is in the cafeteria and starts at 1:55. Your favorite Firsties will be performing :) The theme for this month is: Wear your favorite color day It's that time of year again - the time where the temperature drops drastically. With this drop in temperature also comes increased wind. This combination makes for a very cold playground at recess. Please, please, please send your Firstie to school with a hat and gloves every day. If, in the off chance that it is warm enough that they aren't necessary we won't make them wear them. We have a very limited supply of extras here at school and today we didn't have enough for all of the children who needed them. In addition, it is very helpful if your child's gear is labeled with their name. I can't even begin to tell you the number of gloves, hats, coats, ski pants, etc that float around this school lost and unclaimed. Thanks for your help! Today our class proudly wore yellow ribbons and we attended an assembly with the entire Danville School where we celebrated Veteran's Day. We learned where, when and why Veteran's Day originated and Charlie Winn (Connor's Dad) shared his experiences as a Veteran and answered students' questions. Mrs. Remick's Tutorial group even did a presentation (you can see it in the video below). To those who have served and those who continue to do so we say THANK YOU! Today Firsties were excited to use the new word tile boards during FUNdations. We've started working on tapping words when we read and spell, and they're doing a great job! Doing this work is building the foundational skills necessary for developing decoding and encoding skills (reading and spelling). As we progress students will learn more complex spelling patterns. Ask your Firstie to show you how we tap out words!
Yesterday Firsties made themselves a delicious domino! We have been learning about turn around facts - two addition sentences where the addends switch places but the sum remains the same. Each Firstie got their own domino and wrote the two turn around facts. Once they solved the addition sentences they then created their own domino using graham crackers, cream cheese and chocolate chips. Lastly, they got to eat their tasty treat! This is leading up to our next mathematical adventure where we will learn about fact families and the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction.
